Drugs

There is a list in part 10 of Part XVI of the Drug Tariff. All items on this list are automatically exempt from a prescription charge.

Please note; there are other products not listed in here, such as Dianette, which can be given as a free of charge contraceptive providing the prescriber makes this clear in the prescription.

If the prescription is for an item not on this list and is for contraceptive purposes the prescriber should mark the item with the female symbol ♀ or endorse the item in another way which makes it clear that the prescription is for contraceptive purposes such as 'CC', 'FP1001', 'CU', 'OC' or similar. In the absence of such an endorsement by the prescriber, the normal prescription charge will apply to that item.

For EPS2 prescriptions, the prescriber must include the endorsement CC in the Prescriber Endorsement field for all items which are for contraceptive purposes, but which are not automatically exempt.

Appliances/Devices

These can be found in Part IXA of the Drug Tariff under contraceptive devices.

It includes entries for:

  • Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices.

  • Vaginal Contraceptive Caps (Pessaries).

  • Vaginal Contraceptive Diaphragm.

For both drugs and appliances, they will show on our systems and on the DM+D as attracting 0 charges. On the DM+D this can be viewed under the 'Actual Medicinal Product Pack' page, under the 'reimbursement information' heading.
