You can use the dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) and Drug Tariff to determine if an item is allowed.
The dm+d is a dictionary of descriptions and codes which represent medicines and devices in use across the NHS. The dm+d contains a variety of information, including:
- whether a product submitted by a dispensing contractor will be reimbursed by NHSBSA
- the indicative price of each pack of a product, where a price is maintained
- current and discontinued products and packs available from manufacturers and suppliers.
The Drug Tariff outlines:
- what will be paid to pharmacy contractors for NHS services provided, either for reimbursement or for remuneration
- rules to follow when dispensing
- value of the fees and allowances you'll be paid
- drug and appliance prices you'll be paid.
Items found in Part XVIIIA of the Drug Tariff cannot be prescribed on an NHS prescription.
