For applications received before 15 July 2026, your medical exemption certificate is valid for 5 years.

If we receive an application on or after 15 July 2026, your medical exemption certificate will be valid for 10 years.

If the medical condition entitling you to a certificate is cancer and are undergoing treatment for either cancer, the effects of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment’, your medical exemption certificate will be valid for 5 years. If you’re also entitled to a certificate with another medical condition, your certificate will be valid for 10 years.

We'll send you a letter confirming your certificate is due to expire one month before the expiry date if you're under age 60.

The start date of your certificate is backdated one month from the date your FP92A application form is received. We cannot change the start date of a medical exemption certificate.

Your certificate must be valid on the date you collect your NHS prescription.
