Living abroad

Wherever possible UK nationals should receive vaccinations in their country of residence.

Access to the vaccination and decisions on prioritisation is up to the EU country you’re in. Speak to the local healthcare authority in the country for more information.

Studying abroad

UK nationals studying in an EU country can get emergency and medically necessary healthcare where they are studying, including vaccinations.

To demonstrate their entitlement, students who do not hold a valid UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) must apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

Visiting abroad

UK residents visiting an EU country should aim to receive their vaccine when they return to the UK.

If you're unable to return to the UK, you may be entitled to receive a COVID-19 vaccination using your UK EHIC or UK GHIC.

Visiting the UK

UK pensioners with a UK-issued S1 are eligible to receive free NHS care if they:

  • were living in the European Union (EU) or Switzerland on or before 31 December 2020
  • visit the UK or are returning to the UK

The S1 holder must register with a GP in the UK and will be entitled to the vaccine within the same prioritisation as the rest of the population.
