When you apply for a UK EHIC, you can add a:
- spouse
- civil partner
- durable partner
- dependent child
- dependent parent
- dependent grandparent
- dependent grandchild
- Chen, Ibrahim or Teixeira carer
Once you've submitted your application, you'll receive an automated email advising that your application has been submitted.
Applying for a spouse, civil partner or durable partner
Your partner must have a valid National Insurance number (NINO) to apply for a UK EHIC online.

If your partner does not have a valid NINO, send the details of your application to our helpdesk using our online form.
Applying for a child
You can apply for your child if they’re either:
- under 18
- 18 or older and dependant on you
If your child is 18 or older and not dependant on you, they can still be added if they:
- are a non-UK national
- live in the UK
- were born on or after 1 January 2000
Children who live in the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein may also be eligible if your healthcare is paid for by the UK.
Applying for a dependent parent, grandparent or grandchild
You can add a grandchild to your UK EHIC application if they’re a non-UK national, are a national of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein and are either:
- under 18, living in the UK and were born before 1 January 2021
- 18 or over, but born on or after 1 January 2000, and arrived in the UK after 31 December 2020
- 18 or over, born before 1 January 2000, arrived in the UK after 31 December 2020, and are dependent on you
You can add a parent or grandparent to your UK EHIC application if they’re dependent on you or your partner. Their relationship with you must have begun before 1 January 2021, they must live with you and:
- be a non-UK national,
- be a national of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein
- arrived in the UK after 31 December 2020
If they're a national of any other country, they can be added if they have settled or pre-settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
If they do not have settled or pre-settled status, they can be added if their relationship with you began before 1 January 2021.
Adding a dependant
If you’ve already completed your application and wish to add additional family members, send the details of your application to our helpdesk using our online form. You must include your:
- reference number
- name
- date of birth
- address and post code
When you add an additional family member to your record, their entitlement will expire on the same day as the main applicant.
Applicants who are unable to make their own application
You can apply for a UK EHIC for somebody else if they're not able to do so themselves by:
You must confirm that you have authority to act on the applicant’s behalf and provide evidence of this. The evidence we can accept is either a:
- power of attorney
- Court of Protection (COP)
- letter from a medical professional confirming the applicant is unable to deal with their own affairs - this must be on header paper and confirm their GMC
- a letter of authority (LOA)
A LOA must include:
- full name of the main applicant
- date of birth of the main applicant
- first line of address and postcode of the main applicant
- third-party’s full name
- third-party's date of birth, or the month and year they started acting as the authorised third party
- main applicant's relationship to the third-party or a password the third-party would need to quote when contacting us
- email address or telephone number the third-party will use to contact us
- signature of the main applicant - this can be a wet or electronic signature
