If you’re studying in the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you may be eligible for a UK European Health Insurance Card (UK EHIC) if you’re either:

  • an EU national
  • a UK national who was studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021
  • a non-UK or EU national with limited or indefinite leave to remain. You need to have started your course before 1 January 2021

If you are a non-UK or EU national student, you can apply online.

Non-UK or EU national students will not be able to use this card for treatment in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein unless one of these countries is your country of study.

To apply for a UK EHIC if you are an EU national, email nhsbsa.ehicapplicationsohs@nhsbsa.nhs.uk and include:

  • the name and address of the UK educational institution if you're travelling as part of your course
  • the address of where you're studying in the EU
  • your address in the UK
  • details of the qualification you're studying for
  • the dates your course started and is due to finish

If you started your course after 1 January 2021, or you're planning to study in an EU country, you'll need to apply for a student UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC).

You will not be able to use this card for treatment in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein unless one of these countries is your country of study.
