Regulation 11 is for the replacement of dental appliances.
It applies when the original appliance is lost, stolen, or broken by the patient.
Regulation 11 does not cover any laboratory-made, custom occlusal appliance such as:
- bite raisers
- bite guards
- night guards
It also does not apply where the appliance has become damaged due to wear and tear.
The replacement appliance must be the same as the original. This can be claimed regardless of when the original appliance was fitted.
The replacement appliance can only be done at the original practice where it was first made and fitted.
England
The appliances covered are:
- dentures
- obturators
- bridges
- orthodontic appliances
The patient must pay 30% of the band 3 charge per replacement appliance.
The patient cannot be exempt from paying a Regulation 11 charge unless they're a prisoner.

General Dental Contracts are awarded 12 UDAs for Regulation 11 claims.
Orthodontic contracts are not awarded any UOA’s for Regulation 11 claims. The patient charge will not be deducted from the contracts schedule.
Wales
Regulation 11 only covers orthodontic appliances.
The patient must pay £86.40 for the replacement of an orthodontic appliance.
Where a patient’s general dental appliance has been lost, stolen or broken, the practice would claim for the relevant Care Package and laboratory fee.
The patient will pay for this in full, unless they have a benefit or exemption.
If any further treatment is required, it can be included on the same Regulation 11 claim.
