There are different forms of support you may be able to get. We're unable to advise you on your eligibility for these types of support.

Council Tax Exemption or Discount

Full time students may be either exempt from Council Tax or entitled to discount.

You must contact your local council to see what support is available.

Student Loans

Whether you can apply for a student loan depends on the type of social work course and what you’ve been awarded by us.

Postgraduate students may be eligible to apply for Student Finance if you only receive the Placement Travel Allowance (PTA). If you receive the full bursary, you are not eligible to apply for a student loan.

Undergraduate students may be eligible to apply for Student Finance, even if you receive the Social Work Bursary.

University and college hardship funds

You may be able to apply for financial help from your university or college's hardship fund. This is only usually considered if you've taken your full entitlement to a bursary, a student loan if eligible, and you're in need of further financial support.

For further information, you must speak to your student support office or the student union.

NHS Low Income Scheme

If you're not automatically exempt from paying NHS charges, but have a low income, you may be entitled to claim for help by applying to the NHS Low Income Scheme.

The NHS Low Income Scheme covers:

  • NHS prescriptions
  • NHS dental treatment
  • sight tests, glasses and contact lenses
  • travel to receive NHS treatment
  • NHS wigs and fabric supports

Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC)

If you're not automatically exempt from paying NHS charges and are not eligible for full help through the NHS Low Income Scheme, you could save money on NHS prescription charges by buying a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC).
