This is the number of allocated bursary places available at each university. You must contact your university or college for information about the number of capped places.
If you're not allocated a 'capped' place, the only Social Work Bursary funding which may be available to you is Placement Travel Allowance (PTA). We cannot offer any other elements of the funding.
You must speak to your university about how they allocate the bursaries as they make the decision. We have no input in the allocation process.
The regulations and number of capped places are set each year by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).
You can read more information on the gov.uk website.
Future academic years
If you progress onto the next academic year of your course, you'll keep your capped bursary place unless you:
- have a break in your studies
- repeat part of your course
- change university or college
Break in studies or repeat part of your course
If you withdraw from your course or repeat any part of it, you'll be removed from the allocation.
You cannot be considered for a capped bursary place when you resume your course unless your break in studies was:
- for maternity leave
- due to exceptional circumstances
If you have exceptional circumstances such as ill health, a disability, or a bereavement supported by your university, you may be considered for a capped bursary place when you resume.
This decision is made by us once:
- you've completed any relevant bursary applications
- your university or college has given us full details about your circumstances
- your university or college have given us the relevant academic years capped bursary place list
Maternity leave
If you've been nominated for a capped bursary place, you can continue to receive bursary payments.
This may be up to a maximum of 12 months from either:
- the agreed date of the start of the maternity leave period
- the day after the birth date of your child
You must give your university or college medical evidence of your pregnancy before starting maternity leave such as a MATB1 form.
The start date of your maternity leave must be agreed with them in advance.
Your university or college must forward a withdrawal form to us which includes:
- the expected date of confinement
- the last date of attendance
- the expected date you'll return to complete the course
- confirmation you've given relevant evidence
When you resume your course after a period of maternity leave, you'll keep your capped bursary place if this does not exceed 12-months.
Your university or college cannot reallocate or transfer your allocation to another student.
Maternity leave is not payable for students taking a break before an NHS Social Work funded year.
Transfer university or college
By leaving a university or college, you're also leaving one of their capped bursary places.
You may only be able to receive an allocation if your new university or college have a place available.
Contact your new university or college for further guidance.
